  1. I don't remember her name but we had a teacher in the old building, Miss Carpenter maybe, who used to keep a yardstick in her hand while she taught. I confess; I feared that lady. I remember seeing David Sanders (Arky) walk to the front of the class and spit (after calling up very loudly the projectile) into the trash can. Miss Carpenter looked like Babe Ruth swinging that yardstick. She chased him all over the room and out into the hall. David was never the same, he would twitch every time he saw the lady.

Then there was Tom Moore's math class; I remember Fred Griffin having him so confused that he would walk next door and bring Mrs. Moore back to straighten things out. Fred, you should repent.

High School, ah high school. Sherman Millender, Shirley Lewis, Betty Mischen, Ms. Skaggs, Ms. Hudson, Ms. Hardison, Mr. Williams (ouch it still hurts), Coach Grey, Coach Clark. If this is not an all star line up there will never be one. In a word, Great. They were the best. And Fred; you were at it again with Mr. Rogers. I really believe many of the licks Carl Grey received from Mr. Rogers were the result of you frustrating him with questions he could not answer.

These days did prepare us for the next stage of life, but they also gave us many memories for this stage. What a joy, what a comfort.

I miss you all and look forward to our next re-union.

  2. I remember a lot of great teachers. Teachers like Mrs. Skaggs and Mrs. Mischen made English tolerable. I remember Mrs. Mischen taking a group to see Julius Caesar in Forth Worth and then again to the movies to see "To Kill a Mockingbird". And who can forget Mrs. Skaggs trying to teach Chaucer "What that Aprill, with his shoures soote, The Droghte of March hast pearced to the roote."

Shirley Lewis, Mr. Rogers (seemed like we always got him on roll making noises while he wrote on the board), Mrs. Shelly and Texas History, Miss Henderson and Spanish (She took the time to come to the hospital and help me keep up.), Mr. Hollifield (Kathy was still in high school when we got engaged. When he found out he stopped class for one whole period to lecture on on getting married too young. It's been 41 years so I guess he missed this one. I also remember the commotion when we mixed the sulfuric acid with some wrong chemical and clouded out the classroom.).

Coach Brazil, Coach Grey, Coach Clark and who was the poor coach that the guys will all call out "hey Zero" as he was walking down the hall?

Male teachers wore coats and ties and Mr. Noel was often seen in his bow tie. Mr. Gipson and Algebra one. He did so well when I took Algebra in college it was two months before I learned anything new. That was my first "A".

Mrs. Hollis in the library was always trying to get us quiet and Mrs. Mankins in the office was always keeping us straight. And I fondly look back at our lovable "Baldy" Bill Williams and "Barrrrrrrrney" Newton.

All in all I believe we had a great bunch of teachers in High School that cared for us all.

Many more good memories than bad.

  3. Danny, tried to log onto the blog but couldn’t get it to post...as far as teachers go, how about Mr. Cason, “Fuzzy” in FFA and of course Mr. Clem in band ….he did more for me than any other as far as confidence and maturity ….of course based on the attached maybe I still haven’t grown up…Jill and I just returned from hiking Kilimanjaro a couple of weeks ago….

  4. "Hey Zero". Didn't that have to be Coach Roy Stone? That man did a lot to shape my life, and instill discipline I'd need later in life. Coach Stone was head football coach when I played 10th grade football at Williams. I remember Shirley Lewis - my subschool principal at PSHS, class of 1981. Please tell me about Mrs. Skaggs - the name is so famailiar, but I just can't remember.

Tom Moore was Principal when i was at Williams. Mrs. Davis, history teacher at Williams. I think she later became a Principal. Coach Reese and Brazil at Bowman. Coach Ezell. Ms. Vardell, who was a coaches wife, I believe. Ms. Hyde. at Bowman.
